Fifty years ago the original Planet of the Apes was released in theaters.
Based on the sci-fi novel by Pierre Boulle (who also wrote the book, “The Bridge over the River Kwai”), 1968’s ninth highest grossing film was directed by Franklin J. Schaffner (he won the Oscar for his next film, Patton)
and features a screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, from the Twilight Zone.
Of course, Charlton Heston led the cast, which also featured Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans and James Whitmore. It was nominated for two Oscars — costumes and score. It didn’t win either but took home an honorary one for outstanding make-up achievement.
To celebrate this historic movie, alternative rock veterans, Big Green Cherry, will perform Planet of the Apes: The Rock Musical Parody; an uproarious adult adaptation of the 1968 classic science fiction movie in which apes and humans battle for control. In this hilarious production, a young astronaut (Lt. Buzz Superstorm) travels into outer space to re-unite with his alien girlfriend, but crashes on an earth-like planet ruled by apes.
